To read the contents of tar file without extracting use "tar -tf" option as follows:

$ tar -tf filename.tar.gz

If the archive contains multiple files and directories, it is recommended to force the output to less for easier viewing, as the following;

$ tar tf filename.tar.gz | less

You will be able to view contenets .tar, .tar.gz files without extracting them
